Summary of case: The appellant appealed on the grounds that he had a large 81 acre farm and there was only himself, his wife and Ernest Allison to work the land which was mixed farm and he was of 'great value' to him. The local tribunal had stated that he could be 'spared for the army after the 9 Oct1916'. He was not in a certified occupation and was single of 23 years of age. The appellant 'is an able man in the prime of life and as his farm is only a small dales farm of 81 acres, less than 20 acres of which is tillage, it was considered that it was not expedient in the national interest that he should retain the services of this man.' after 9 October when the harvest was in. The farm could be managed by the appellant, his wife and with the 'assistance of a strong young boy'.
