Summary of case: James Shuttleworth worked at a local hospital as porter and attendant dealing with injured men from the local works and mines doing work that was deemed unsuitable for women. He is the only male attendant at there and 40 beds had been placed at the disposal of the Admiralty which could have a large number of patients at any moment. The hospital had advertised twice for a person to replace him but had one applicant deemed ineligible due to his being of 59 years of age. The other applicant was 33 years of age, a discharged soldier working on the NE Railways as a porter but under the new Act is liable for service. On 6 June 1916 the tribunal had exempted Shuttleworth until 7 Aug and on 15 Aug another application was made which was refused. It was considered by the tribunal that 'sufficient efforts had not been made to get an older man or an exempt or time expired man.'
