Summary of case: He is a general grocer and ice cream vendor and his business depended entirely on him. His three brothers are all serving in the army as are his two former employees. His wife is Italian, does not speak good English and is illiterate making it impossible for her to manage the business. The local tribunal granted temporary exemption to 6 Sep 1916 as they found it “incredible that an Italian woman would live for 11 years in England without learning the language”. However, on 16 Aug 1916 his solicitor notified the tribunal that he had failed his medical and been rejected.
