Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 1345 Appeal against conscription of: Albert Metcalfe Age: Not stated Address: South Fields Farm, Middleton Tyas Occupation: Horseman and stockman Local tribunal: Richmond Rural District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Services Act Grounds for appeal: Not stated Appellant: John Metcalfe, father Summary of case: Appellant begs for further exemption for his son. He appeals on the grounds that the man is sole horseman and stockman on the farm, of 65 acres, of which 30 acres are arable. He also has cattle, including milk cows, working horses and sheep. Appellant is 68 years of age, and cannot do much heavy work, and would not be able to carry on the farm if man taken, which would be to the national disadvantage. This man is the only assistant the applicant has on the farm, except for a 12 year old maid servant. If the man is taken, the Appellant would be forced to sell all his stock which would mean heavy financial loss to him. His other son is in France, and his son-in-law was killed in France some time ago, the applicant provides for his Widow with a home at South Fields. Another son-in-law has been out 18 months at the front and still out. Appellant begs to apply that as the man is a horseman and stockman he is in certified occupation and entitled as a matter of right to an exemption certificate. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 5 Aug 1916. Allowed exemption to 23 Nov 1916. |
