Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 1339 Appeal against conscription of: Joseph Steedman Age: 27 Address: School House, Catterick, Yorkshire Occupation: Head Teacher of Catterick School Local tribunal: Richmond Rural District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, d) serious hardship Appellant: Rev. W. Kerr-Smith, chairman representing managers of Catterick School Summary of case: The local tribunal has failed to take into sufficient consideration the exceptional hardness of the case. That Mr Askwith promised exemption in the case of men who were the sole support of a widowed mother. That the local tribunal having already granted exemption in the case of schoolmasters where the needs of the school were not so pressing, or the hardship entailed not so great, the decision is unequal. The reasons of appeal to the higher tribunal are stated more fully on the attached paper. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 5 Aug 1916. Allowed exemption to 1 Jan 1917 |
