TitleWWI Appeal Tribunal papers: Thomas Macaulay Moore Brooksbank
DescriptionNorth Riding appeal tribunal number: 128
Appeal against conscription of: Thomas Macaulay Moore Brooksbank
Age: 33 years 3 months
Address: Keld, Richmond, Yorks
Occupation: Primary school master
Local tribunal: Reeth Rural District Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested
Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, d) serious hardship
Appellant: Thomas Macaulay Moore Brooksbank
Summary of case: He appealed on the grounds to continue in his work as school master, “especially during the present serious shortage of teachers”. Serious hardship was claimed as he supported his 75 year old father with heart weakness, his 72 year old mother and his sister who did not work due to “a serious nervous complaint”. They all lived in the tenured house which came as “a condition of being the head teacher of Keld School and should I, through any means, lose that situation, I must give up the tenancy of the house”. The family were reliant upon him paying “the rent, rates etc”. Loss of his position as head teacher would mean loss of the house and his financial contribution would mean his family would “suffer serious hardship”.
The local tribunal granted a temporary exemption of 6 months on the grounds of “domestic hardship would ensue if he were taken but it might be advisable to appeal”. The subsequent Appeal was supported by B W Williams Capt., Military Representative.
