Crombie & sons, Solicitors, on behalf of John Bolton Summary of case: On 14 April last granted temporary exemption until 1 Jul, as the time of the application he managed for his mother then aged 81, but she has since died and he is now carrying on the executor until her estate is realised, and the licence has now been transferred to him. The farm is owned by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners who are considering an application by the applicant for the tenancy thereof. The family have farmed it for 78 years. He had a man working for him at the time a Mr Thomas Holdsworth who has since been called up, so he is now the only man working on the farm and managing a Public House, except for casual labour as he can obtain in cases of emergency. The farm consists of 160 acres, of which 30 acres are arable, and 50 acres grass, the rest being rough. The farm adjoins the public house. The stock consists of four horses, 12 beasts, one cow 41 sheep and eight pigs. He has 20 acres of hay to get in, and following this has between 20-30 acres of corn, then threshing to attend to and the turnips to get off the land. He contends that the work on the farm is of national importance. The public house as 12 bedrooms, for people to stay in the country. He has three sisters, who look after the domestic arrangements and waiting on. But he has to do all the heavy work, moving barrels etc., and supervision. He also as to attend to the visitors horses and similar duties. A conditional exemption is requested as he acts in the above capacity.
