Summary of case: ‘The appellant [Thomas Verity’s father] has four sons of military age and another son stated to be 16, who I am informed will be 18 next month’s making five in all. Yet he does not hesitate at such a time to prevent them from serving their and his country. From the evidence it was impossible to avoid concluding that a sort of playing pillar and post was in progress as regards the staffing of two farms and there was a tendency to put private [and especially farming] interests before those of the country. I have no hesitation in saying that the man who would make quite a suitable soldier should serve.’
