With certificate of conviction at York on 14 November 1877 of John Dobson alias John McDolan aged 11 years for stealing 1s 1/2d in money, the property of William Henry McShane, at the township of Clifton on 12 November 1877. Dobson/McDolan was sentenced to hard labour at the Castle of York for 21 days and then, as he is a Roman Catholic, to five years at the Roman Catholic Reformatory School at Market Weighton.
