- bill of indictment of Thomas Smith of St Saviourgate in the city of York chicory merchant. On 1 August 1878 Smith became tenant of a close of land called Toft Close in the parish of Haxby, belonging to James Welburn of Haxby, at a yearly rent of £25 6s payable half-yearly. Toft Close was exempt from income tax (property tax), but Smith pretended to Welburn on 15 April 1879 and 14 October 1879 that £12 7s 9d was all that he had to pay for a half-year's rent, as he (Smith) had paid 5s 3d in property tax. Endorsed with names of witnesses and "no bill"
- file of papers, including: i) recognizance dated 23 November 1881 made by James Welburn of Haxby yeoman for his appearance at the next Quarter Sessions to prefer a bill of indictment against Thomas Smith of St Saviourgate in the city of York chicory merchant for obtaining 10s 6d from him by false pretences

- note dated 15 April 1879 that £12 7s 9d was the total amount of rent that J. Welburn was entitled to claim for half a year's rent from T. Smith
