TitleSettlement examination: Robert Walker
DescriptionCopy settlement examination of Robert Walker of Ebberston mason and bricklayer. He was born at Howsham in the East Riding and bound apprentice for seven years when aged 15 or 16 years to Robert Stockdale of Pickering mason and bricklayer. He served until the Candlemas preceding the end of his term and at the Pickering Candlemas Fair Stockdale turned him over to John Metcalfe of Ebberston mason and bricklayer for the remainder of his term of apprenticeship. On the Wednesday of the Whitsun week preceding the end of his term he went by Metcalfe's direction to Everley in the East Riding where he continued with John Taylor working at his business in building a dwelling house until the end of his apprenticeship. Generally, but not always, he used to go to Ebberston on Saturdays in the afternoon and stayed there until Monday morning and he is certain that on the Saturday preceding the end of his apprenticeship he went from Everley to Ebberston and slept in his own lodgings on that night and on the Sunday. His original master Robert Stockdale gave him his indenture of apprenticeship in return for a few shillings. He was aged over 21 years when he completed his apprenticeship and has done nothing to obtain a settlement elsewhere

With note from Travis and Woodall at Scarborough dated 12 November that the inhabitants of Ebberston wanted an opinion on the above examination to determine if Walker's settlement was at Ebberston. Walker is now in the militia somewhere in the South, but his wife and children will be removed from Pickering to Ebberston and will ask relief of the parish
