Description | Settlement examination of John van Alstyne who believes that he was born in the state of New York in the county of Columbo in North America in 1779. About three years ago he went from the West Indies to Gibraltar as a sailor in the Transport Service of Great Britain and from there went up the Mediterranean to Egypt. On his return from Egypt he entered on board His Majesty's sloop of war "Delight" at Lisbon. About eight months ago he was paid off at Plymouth and has since served on board a collier from the port of Hastings, and has also been employed at anchorsmith's work in Sunderland and Bristol. The night before he was committed to prison, he slept at Stockton in county Durham on his way to Liverpool. He has not done anything to gain a settlement elsewhere |
