TitleLetters from John Calvert at Whitby relating to his position as bailiff
DescriptionLetters from John Calvert at Whitby relating to his position as bailiff, including:

- letter dated 27 June 1791 from John Calvert at Whitby to Mr Joseph Burke attorney at law at Malton. On 21 May [1791] Calvert was deputed as bailiff by the executors of the late Nathannil [sic] Cholmley esquire, to replace Zachariah Knaggs. He asks for the names of those who are to be jurors at the next Quarter Sessions, so that he can pass on necessary information

- letter dated 30 June 1791 from John Calvert at Whitby to Mr Richard Smithson deputy sheriff at Malton. He apologises for not replying by return as he got the letter at 12 o'clock and the post goes out at 1 o'clock. He had to go two miles to Zacharias Knaggs to ask for the lists of jurors, but got nothing but abuse and bad language. Knaggs came to town with him and promised to call in the evening, but he went home "much ellevated [sic] in liquor". His reason for not giving Calvert the lists was to favour one person, but Calvert leaves it to Smithson to judge who that person might be

- letter dated 2 July 1791 from John Calvert at Whitby to Mr Richard Smithson deputy sheriff at Malton. He has received Smithson's warrant, and Zacheriah [sic] Knaggs delivered up his warrant last evening, when Mr Brown the chief constable went to him and persuaded him to do so. Calvert executed the process on John Mahorn and his wife, and Bowes is at Greenland and his wife cannot be found. Calvert will summon the jurors listed in the warrant
