The second appeal to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal on 29 August 1918 was dismissed [case NRCC/CL 9/1/5658]. On 4 October 1918 Ward appealed again on the grounds of age, family, an aged mother in law and his wife’s ill health; ‘my wife suffers from appendicitis’ He also states that he is in a certified occupation and that he is ‘the only male assistant and in view of the large number of convalescent officers to be stationed in the immediate vicinity of the shop, my services are very necessary for the conduct of the business.’ On17 Oct 1918.
