Summary of case: The Governors of Middlesbrough High School appealed against the conscription of Heyden stating that ‘we cannot possibly spare Mr. Van Der Hayden. His departure would ruin our plans for the immediate development of the school and would gravely prejudice the prospects of our senior boys. The local tribunal granted exemption to 1 January 1919. The national service representative appealed this decision stating that it is not in the national interest that this man should any longer remain in civil employment as a senior mathematical master.
