Summary of case: Goodall had already had a number of conditional exemptions, to 31 March 1918. On this occasion, his employers referred to a resolution of the Incorporated Justices' Clerks' Society, passed 18 April 1918, saying that many JusticesÂ’ Clerks and Magisterial Clerks had already joined up and that, if any more went, this would affect the business of Magistrates' Courts. Some Courts might have to be closed altogether. The Society had written, accordingly, to the Director General of National Service as well as the Secretary of State for the Home Department; neither had responded. The May tribunal dismissed the appeal but said Goodall was not to be called up before 1 Aug 1918. [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/4480]
